Chapter 10: October 10th Part II

The rain continued to pour outside and four over a minute, it was the only sound Hinata heard while she was sitting down on Naruto's sofa in his apartment. He paced back and forth for a bit, looking down at the ground, stopping and letting out a sigh.

"Well, there's no turning back now," he thought.
"You've heard the story about the nine-tailed demon fox that attacked Konoha year's ago, right?" Naruto asked nervously
"Mm-hmm," she nodded.
"The fourth Hokage was the only one who was able to stop that thing's rampage and save everyone. He defeated it," Naruto said, turning away from her and walking towards the window in his front room. There was silence for a brief moment.

"Well," Naruto continued, "That's only half the story."
Hinata's eyes grew wide upon hearing this revelation.
"Half the story?" She thought.

"While the fourth was able to defeat the demon fox, he didn't kill it. He used a forbidden jutsu to seal the demon inside of an infant, keeping it locked up. The jutsu, while successful ended up costing the fourth Hokage his life."

Hinata stared at him with her eyes wide open, as Naruto continued looking out the window. She couldn't believe what she was hearing.

"The child was to act as a container for the demon fox. So long as the demon was sealed away, the village was safe, including the child that harbored the demon."

Naruto paused for a full minute. Hinata continued to look at him without saying a word.

"The kid that carries the demon was unaware of what was inside of him until he was twelve years old," Naruto went on, sighing heavily, getting ready to drop a bomb on Hinata.

"I... I was born on the day the demon fox attacked the village and..." Naruto gulped, "I'm the kid that was used to seal that monster. The demon fox is sealed in my body."

Hinata looked like she just had the wind knocked out of her. Naruto just stood in front of the window, looking outside apprehensively, giving Hinata time to take in what she was just told while at the same time bracing himself for her reaction.

Hinata's mind raced back to a time when they were children.

[Flashback]

Hinata is near the playground and the children are playing. Naruto comes running, smiling, climbing up on the jungle gym, full of energy. The adults take all of their children and leave, leaving Naruto alone, confused and sad. This isn't the first time this had happened to him, but it was the first time Hinata had witnessed it. If Naruto had seen her that day, he might have known that she was looking on, feeling sad right along with him.

Another time, a child is on the swing being pushed by their parent.

"Can I swing, too?" Naruto asked cheerfully.

The  parent looked at Naruto with daggers in their eyes, took their kid and left, leaving Naruto confused once again and unaware that he was being watched by Hinata. He climbed into the swing and slowly rocked back and forth, looking so hurt.

A week later there was an outing and just about everyone in Konoha was there. All the kids were with their parents but Naruto was sitting under a tree all by himself. Hinata watched him from a distance next to her father. A group of villagers not too far from Naruto looked at him and he caught their glares. He was even able hear some of the things they murmured under their breath.

"Freak."
"Monster."
"Worthless kid."
"Why doesn't he just die?"

Hinata could see that the group of villagers was looking at Naruto like they depised him with every fiber of their being. They looked at him like they hated him just for being alive and it was becoming a reoccurring thing. Whenever she watched Naruto in public, no matter where he was, he was unwanted, shunned. The adults wanted nothing to do with him and the children had picked up on their behavior by observing their parents.

When the adults were all off with their children elsewhere, Hinata went looking for Naruto to find Naruto, but he wasn't under the tree anymore. Wondering where he could have gone off to, she continued her search and she eventually ended up by the river. Just as she was about to give up, she heard someone crying. She looked over to see who it was and down the hill by the river, it was Naruto, sitting down, crying his eyes out. Before she knew, she started crying, too.

[End Flashback]

Hinata had always wondered why Naruto was treated with such verbal, unspoken hostility as a child. She never knew the reason until now. Naruto had been treated like an outcast for nearly his entire childhood for something that he had no control over. He had dealt with pain no child should ever have to deal with. Because he carried a demon inside of him, he was looked at as if he were the demon. He was always alone. She finally understood it all. Tears were streaming down her face.

"Hinata..." Naruto spoke, breaking the silence, turning around, looking down, oblivious to Hinata's tears.
"If you hate me... or you don't want to speak to me again--"
Before he could get anymore words out, Hinata had her around wrapped around him, he face buried in his chest. It wasn't the reaction he was expecting. He could hear her sobbing.

"Hinata?" he questioned, still confused by her actions.
"Oh, Naruto-kun," she said, still burried in his chest, crying, "I had no idea. I didn't know why you had to face such hardship as a child."
"You... you don't think differently of me knowing the truth?"
"Of course not! I could never hate you!" She said, looking up at him.
"But so many people still died today."
"And that's the reason you don't like your birthday?" she questioned, wiping the tears from her eyes.
"What happened, wasn't your fault. Bad things happen all the time, Naruto-kun. Even on someone's birthday. I'm glad you were born and I wouldn't trade that for anything," Hinata said, looking at him with a smile.

To say Naruto was stunned would be an understatement. After looking at her in surprise for a brief moment, he smiled and returned her hug.

"Thank you, Hinata."

They stood locked in each other's arms until rays of sunlight begin coming in through the window.

"The rain stopped," Hinata said, separating from Naruto.
"I haven't opened the gifts you brought for me," Naruto said, scratching his head, a little embarrassed from hugging her.

Naruto walked over to the table where Hinata had left the gifts when she came over earlier. He picked up the first box and opened it.

"Whoa! Cinnamon rolls! Did you make these yourself, Hinata?"
"Mm-hm," she nodded with a smile.
"I'll put these in the oven and we'll eat 'em nice and hot," he grinned.

A short time later, the cinnamon rolls were done and...

"Man, these are great! You're an awesome cook, Hinata!" Naruto said cheerfully before taking another bite. Hinata smiled and blushed.

"Oh, there's still one more present to open," Naruo said, while Hinata looked on in anticipation for Naruto to unwrap it.

He opened up the gift and at first was speechless.

"Do... do you like it?" Hinata asked in.
"It... it's just like the fourth Hokage's jacket. I LOVE IT! Thank you so much, Hinata!" Naruto was so happy that he picking her up off the sofa and gave her the biggest hug she'd ever gotten, her face turning a couple shades of red.

"Of all the Hokages, you seem to admire him the most," Hinata said after Naruto put her down.
"Got that right. I never did blame him for sealing the demon fox inside of me. Even though things are better now, I still hated my birthday. Well, until today that is," he looked at her smiling, making her blush yet again.

"Hey, wanna go to one of my favorite spots?" he asked. Hinata looked at him, wondering where they'd go.

Turns out that besides Ichiraku ramen, Naruto's favorite place was atop the Hokage stone faces. From there, you could see the entire village. Everything just looked so beautiful up there.
"It's really nice up here, Naruto-kun. Do you come up here often?"
"Just when I need to think, or when I just feel like looking out and seeing everything. This is the first time I've been up here with someone else."
"R-really?" she asked, secretly feeling special.
"Yup!"

They spent hours on the monument talking. When the sun begin to set, Naruto walked Hinata home.

"Thanks again, Hinata. Thanks to you, this day has been really great."
"You're welcome, Naruto-kun. Thank you for walking me home."
"Anytime. I'll see ya later."

Naruto turned to leave the Hyuga residence and Hinata watched him go. He suddenly stopped and turned around, coming back towards her.

"Is something wrong?" she asked, only to be taken completely aback by his actions. He'd kissed her on the right cheek.

"Good night, Hinata," he said as he raced off with a huge grin, leaving her standing there by herself, stunned at what just happened. All she could do was lift a hand to tough her right cheek.
Well this was a longer chapter than the last two. I think I ended up adding some stuff from the original plotting I did a year ago. Hinata giving Naruto a jacket like the 4th's was new. I figured it'd be a real nice gift for her to give him. Naruto kissing Hinata on the cheek was in the original draft. =)

Oh and if anyone is wondering where Sakura has been the last few chapters, she's coming back real soon.
